Folding Power Wheelchair A Convenient Option
If you need a light-weight, convenient wheelchair to transport which moves under
its own power, a folding power wheelchair can be quickly and easily loaded into any vehicle.
Larger wheelchairs and scooters can sometimes only be loaded in larger vehicles;
some fit in the trunk of a car after disassembling them but the pieces are heavy and cumbersome. Without a small
group of strong people to load it into a car, a heavy power-base wheelchair or power scooter requires a lift or ramp to get into a vehicle.
The smallest, most portable wheelchairs are manual wheelchairs. The problem with these, however, is that if your physical condition prevents you from pushing
yourself, you lose the independence that a motor can provide. A folding transport wheelchair
may be lightweight and easy to transport, but you won’t be able to get around
on your own once you get to your destination.
Power wheelchairs, which are mechanized versions of the manual wheelchair design,
are the best option for light-weight, automated mobility. Portable versions are designed to be loaded into vehicles
and airplanes in various ways, either through disassembly or folding, or a combination of the two: in some cases,
the motor mechanism can be detached from the chair portion, which then folds up to save space.
Saving space is another advantage of folding wheelchairs. While most
power wheelchairs can be disassembled, a folding wheelchair is more compact when stored, and can usually fit in
the trunk of even a small vehicle. Power-base wheelchairs and power scooters generally don’t fit in small vehicles
and must be transported in a vehicle at least as large as a minivan, without much room left over for luggage.
Folding wheelchairs are an excellent option for traveling.
Folding wheelchairs can generally be loaded into a vehicle by one strong person,
or two people of average strength. The heaviest piece can weigh as little as about 60 pounds, while it’s usually
somewhere around 80. Heavy duty folding wheelchairs are available, capable of supporting users of up to 300 pounds
without sacrificing efficiency. The heaviest piece of these wheelchairs will be about 100 pounds.
A folding wheelchair doesn’t sacrifice comfort while traveling, because
most wheelchair accessories
can be attached just as easily to a folding wheelchair. As long as the combined
weight of yourself and the items you’re carrying doesn’t exceed the chair’s capacity, you can carry all the bags
and items you would normally use.
A folding power wheelchair provides an excellent combination of portability and
automated mobility, and can be very useful traveling any distance by car or airplane.
