A Heavy Duty Folding Power Wheelchair Offers Extra Weight Capacity in Compact Device
A power wheelchair user who weighs over a certain amount or has to carry a lot of
cargo can have trouble finding a wheelchair which folds down to a lightweight, portable package yet meets their
performance requirements. A heavy duty folding power wheelchair is uncommon but they do exist, albeit with a higher
weight than a normal travel power wheelchair and a lower weight capacity than a heavy duty power-base
wheelchair.
A folding power wheelchair is an excellent option for
frequent travelers, by vehicle or airplane, who need to pack their wheelchair while traveling. Folding power
wheelchairs take up the least possible amount of storage space and can be disassembled with the weight of the
heaviest pieces taken into account in the design. Most folding power wheelchairs have a heaviest piece of about 80
pounds, which can be lifted and loaded easily by one strong person or two people. There are models which are a
little lighter or a little heavier, but their weight capacity generally hovers around 250 pounds. This can be a
problem if you weigh more than that, but it should be no reason not to travel. Even if you’re near the maximum
weight of your chair, you may pass over the weight limit when you add personal items and if you’re carrying any
luggage.
It will be hard to find a folding wheelchair with a weight capacity of over 300
pounds. You can get one with a capacity of up to 400 pounds, but you will sacrifice some amount of portability. The
heaviest piece of a heavy duty folding wheelchair will be more than most people can easily lift and
store.
If you cannot find a power wheelchair which is compact enough for you to easily
travel with and which meets your performance requirements, you do have other options. You may want to consider a
rental service, especially if you do not travel often enough to justify the expense of a power wheelchair
exclusively for trips. If you have a travel companion, you can use a lightweight, compact transport wheelchair
until you reach your destination. Or if you are flying, you can rent a
wheelchair at the airport.
You can also consider using your usual wheelchair and just having to accept the
fact that you’ll have a little less storage space for other luggage. If this makes traveling impossible because you
are going by car and do not have a ramp or lift, you can get a multi-fold portable ramp to get your wheelchair into the car. Even folded, this apparatus will also take up storage
space.
A heavy duty folding power wheelchair is harder to find and a little more
difficult to pack, but if you need the extra performance of a heavy duty device and travel frequently, it is worth
the investment.
