High-Performance Users, Travelers Prefer Lightweight Wheelchairs

Wheelchair technology has grown to include devices designed for people with any level of mobility. Those who need a wheelchair to move because their physical condition makes it necessary to refrain from moderate physical activity can use motorized wheelchairs and scooters to remain mobile. Those who are unable to walk for other reasons yet remain physically fit demand light-weight wheelchairs for their high level of performance.

Manufacturers attempt to reduce the weight of their wheelchairs for two different reasons, to make them portable or to accommodate high-performance users. Travelers who pack their wheelchair in a car or airplane want compact, manageable wheelchairs which are light and at the same time designed to save space. If they are capable of using a manual wheelchair, manual travel wheelchairs are the lightest and most compact, but compact versions of power wheelchairs are available if motorized transport is necessary. These wheelchairs can be folded and disassembled, the individual pieces being light enough to be lifted and packed without too much difficulty.

Physically active manual wheelchair users may see performance as their main deciding factor when choosing a wheelchair. Lighter wheelchairs are easier, faster, and more agile to use, as well as offering more options to the user. Accessories and cargo such as storage bags and textbooks won’t weigh you down as much if your wheelchair is lightweight.

Metal tubes are used in lightweight chairs to reduce the overall weight, with an advanced design and good lightweight materials keeping them strong and stable. The lightest wheelchairs are made of one solid piece; these are known as rigid wheelchairs. The extra pieces, joints, and hinges of a folding wheelchair are eliminated, reducing unnecessary weight. If you prefer a folding wheelchair because it is portable and can be stored in a compact space, lightweight versions are available, but rigid wheelchairs are the lightest.

Lightweight chairs are generally made of aluminum or titanium. Aluminum is more economic and titanium is the highest quality. Titanium is an expensive metal known for its strength and levity. Both folding and rigid wheelchairs are available in titanium.

An ultralight wheelchair excludes certain amenities that you may be used to in a manual wheelchair, such as fold-away footrests and adjustable backs. Most models can be specially made to include these accessories, and some manufacturers offer them in lightweight materials such as carbon fiber or titanium to minimize their effect on the total weight of the wheelchair.

Lightweight wheelchairs are an excellent way to make travel more convenient or maximize your mobility.
