A Power Wheelchair with Lift Seat Can Help You In and Out of Your Home

If you are a wheelchair user, especially if you have recently had to start using a wheelchair or power scooter, you know that your own home can suddenly be filled with obstacles and inconveniences. You may find yourself having trouble reaching the shelves and cupboards you normally use, and even have trouble reaching light switches. Outside of your home it can be difficult to shop; you may not be able to access or see the items on the top shelf at the supermarket. In some buildings or hotels you may have trouble reaching elevator buttons. A power wheelchair with lift seat is a convenient way to help you reach items you normally couldn’t reach from a sitting position.

If you want light switches and shelves to be reachable from a sitting position in your home, you may have to make major changes in your walls, with possible rewiring necessary. You may simply have to give up on accessing items on shelves and in cupboards. If you use a scooter or electric wheelchair at home, you may find that buying a model with a lifting chair is much less expensive than modifying your current home to allow easy access to light switches. They also have the added advantage of being useful anywhere. You will be able to reach normally hard-to-reach items not just in your home, but anywhere else, improving your mobility and independence.

Power scooters and power-base wheelchairs are available with automatic lifting seats. Scooters are less expensive but larger and with a wider turning radius. These are a good choice for people on a budget who have some mobility and can easily enter and exit a scooter, but who cannot walk long distances or suffer from a general inability to exert themselves physically. A person who cannot walk at all and needs to use a wheelchair or a person who has difficulty getting in and out of a scooter or standing up from a sitting position should consider a power-base wheelchair. Your doctor or physical therapist can help you determine what kind of equipment is adequate for your situation. Both power-base wheelchairs and scooters are available with lift chairs, standard or optional depending on the model, at little extra cost.

If you are a manual wheelchair user and do not need to use a power wheelchair or scooter, a lift seat may not be right for you. It may be more economic to use a manual wheelchair and modify your furniture and light switches at home to keep them within your reach.

If you are already a candidate for using a power wheelchair or scooter, a power wheelchair with lift seat will not cost much more and can allow you full access without making expensive modifications to your home.
