Is a Transport Wheelchair Right for You?

A transport wheelchair does not have a mechanism for the user to move independently. Another person is required to push a transport chair. The purpose of mobility devices, whatever may be the cause of the user’s mobility problems, is to allow the user to be as independently mobile as possible.

The controls used in motorized wheelchairs are designed to be easy to operate despite severe physical disability, allowing for people with very little hand strength and coordination to move independently. A person would only use a transport chair in extreme cases, when physical or mental limitations make it impossible to move themselves with an electric wheelchair. They can be useful for people who suffer total paralysis or who have no limb control.

The only reason you may choose to use a transport chair despite being able to use an electric wheelchair is if your physical condition already calls for the constant presence of a medical assistant, and the use of an electric wheelchair would be extremely difficult or unsafe. In this situation, it may be more convenient and economic to use a transport chair. They are the lowest cost wheelchairs available and they are light, compact, and portable. The reduced weight makes it easier for a medical assistant to push you, and you don’t have to spend money on a power wheelchair you may not be able to use. If you do not require constant medical assistance, however, you should attempt to use a power wheelchair; they are more expensive but in just a few weeks the cost of hiring a medical assistant will outweigh the cost of the power wheelchair.

The most common use of transport chairs is for people who are in a temporary situation. Hospital patients are transported using these wheelchairs, and people who are ill or recovering from an illness or medical procedure use transport wheelchairs. A power wheelchair user may choose to use a transport wheelchair if traveling with a companion who is willing to push them along, simply for the convenience of the compact, lightweight device. Travelers generally have the option of renting power wheelchairs, however, and people who travel frequently may prefer to invest in a travel power wheelchair. These wheelchairs are obviously much heavier and more expensive than a transport chair, but they are light and compact enough to take on a plane and load in a car with help.

A transport wheelchair is inexpensive and useful in some situations, especially if these situations are temporary or when it is impossible to become independently mobile.
