Researching Before Renting Your Wheelchair Will Pay Off

Wheelchair Rental for Travel or Temporary Impairment

People who suffer injuries temporarily impairing their mobility or people who are travelling or going on vacation who have disabilities or impaired mobility both benefit from wheelchair rental services. Wheelchairs, scooters, and electric wheelchairs can be rented locally or reserved online with other services also available.

You may be able to get around on crutches if you have been injured or broken a bone, but a wheelchair may help you with your temporary mobility impairment. Some injuries preclude the use of crutches and a wheelchair is necessary, but for those who can use crutches and only need to walk at work or at home, a wheelchair may not be necessary. If you do usually have to go on foot more than a short distance, for example if you’re a student moving around campus, crutches will be painful and slow; a wheelchair may be a better option. Health insurance sometimes covers the cost of wheelchair rentals, or a part of it, if you have a doctor’s prescription. Pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics usually rent wheelchairs. Check your yellow pages, a section on wheelchairs may exist.

Public transportation services generally have transports available for people using wheelchairs. Call them to see if the shuttle or bus you normally take is wheelchair-accessible, and if it’s not request a transport. In most areas the law requires that they make a wheelchair-accessible vehicle available or send you a transport.

Scooter and wheelchair rental services are available for travellers. If you’re planning a vacation, or travelling by plane, look into it. They will make your travelling experience as easy and comfortable as possible. Airports offer wheelchair and scooter rentals for travellers, and scooter or wheelchair rental services will often be willing to meet you at the destination airport if you call in advance. You can rent a wheelchair-accessible vehicle and wheelchair with the same services and have everything waiting at the airport. You should be able to find a wheelchair or scooter rental service in any major airport or city. Renting scooters can make a visit to a theme park or other tourist attraction easier for people with reduced mobility as well.

If you’re planning on going on a cruise ship, make plans in advance and be sure to book with a cruise line that will offer the accommodations you need with limited mobility. Scooter rentals are available, and you can reserve a room which is large enough for your scooter to move, with door-width increased to permit entry. Your room should also have a wheel-in shower and other necessary bathroom facilities like handrails, and all light switches and devices should be reachable. You need to make sure you’ll have access to other areas of the boat, and if door-lips will limit access, make sure assistance will be available. If it is not, do not give them your business. Ask about the port destinations and whether you will be able to participate in the guided tours. Ask whether tours include inaccessible areas or steep hills and make sure they will offer assistance.
