New Designers Appeal to Women in Wheelchairs
There is clothing designed specifically for people in wheelchairs or with mobility problems, but they tend to
take a universal approach, being designed to accommodate any and all possible mobility issues without being tailored to your specific situation.
Women in wheelchairs want fashionable clothing designed with style and mobility taken into account. New products are entering the market made by
designers who make fashionable clothing for wheelchair users. Your mobility limitations do not have to keep you from looking good.
Wheelchair clothing is usually designed with all mobility problems taken into account at once. They’re
excellent for people whose physical condition affects their motor skills and cannot, for example, use buttons and need a Velcro seam. Shirts with
Velcro seams and feaux buttons allow people in this condition to dress themselves, and therefore to be more independent. If you are able to use
buttons, you may want a normal button-down shirt, but you may want one that is designed to look its best while you’re sitting down, rather than
standing or walking like most clothing.
This lack of user-specific design in wheelchair clothing is a contrast to the variety of wheelchairs available.
Wheelchairs have many different designs for every physical condition or lifestyle situation, where clothing designed for wheelchair users is made
to accommodate any mobility problem. Men’s clothing comes in classical designs, such as feaux button-down shirts, polo shirts, khakis, jeans, and
slacks. Pants are modified with elastic waistbands and jackets are cut short to look good while sitting.
There is less variety in men’s clothing design in general than in women’s clothing, making these classic
designs comfortable for most people to use. Women’s wheelchair clothing is often confined to Velcro-seamed versions of very basic designs, which
are usually targeted towards the largest section of the mobility market: senior citizens. Not that senior citizens can’t be fashionable, but this
means the wheelchair clothing market consists mostly of antiquated clothing design illustrative of the “fuddy duddy” stereotype.
There are few wheelchair clothing designers focusing on creating fashionable clothing specifically for use in
wheelchairs but it is a growing market. The clothing they design is meant primarily to look good and be comfortable for people who are sitting
down, which sounds like a good product for any office worker. These designers make jackets, shirts, and blouses which keep an attractive shape
while buttoned even if you’re sitting down. Women’s pants are designed with loose waistbands or elastic for comfort and to compensate for how the
stomach is positioned while sitting, and skirts are made at an aesthetic length without getting caught in your wheels.
These designers create clothing for women in wheelchairs who want comfortable and fashionable clothing tailored
specifically for them.
